New Rule Includes Grandfather Clause

The Georgia Professional Standards Commission has instigated a new rule that affects teachers who get graduate degrees.

According to the new rule, on Dec. 15 a grandfathering period will begin and will remain in effect until July 15, 2011. In order to receive an upgrade under the previous requirements, educators must be enrolled in a program by July 15 and must complete the program by Dec. 15, 2014, if it’s a master’s degree or specialist’s degree or Dec. 15, 2016, if it’s a doctorate.

Commission staff said the state will be adding three new fields in which teachers can be certified so payment for additional degrees in those areas would eventually be grandfathered into the new rule. The new certification areas under consideration are curriculum and instruction, instructional technology and teacher leadership.

“These will become certification fields in which they can get an upgrade,” said Penney McRoy, the commission's director of program approval.
